The cream rose to the top in the Eastern Conference, with the Supporters' Shield-winning Red Bulls advancing to face the second-seeded Crew. New York got this far by eliminating rival D.C. United in fairly comfortable fashion, posting back-to-back 1-0 victories in the conference semifinals. Columbus, meanwhile, needed a strike from Ethan Finlay late in the second leg to force extra time against Montreal before winning on a Kei Kamara goal.
