Mexico scores twice late to turn back short-handed Uruguay, 3-1, in Copa America group game

Goals by Rafael Marquez and Hector Herrera – the first in the 85th minute and the second in stoppage time – lifted Mexico to 3-1 win over outmanned Uruguay in the Copa America Centenario opener for both teams, played before a raucous pro-Mexico crowd of more than 60,000 Sunday.

The victory extended Mexico’s unbeaten streak to 20 games, the longest current streak in international soccer. But it didn’t come easily with Uruguay, playing a man down for the entire second half, rallying to tie the game on a Diego Godin header in the 73rd minute.

If the afternoon ended poorly for Uruguay, it got off to even worse start.
