Mexico stunned the United States, 3-2 in extra time, in the Concacaf Cup playoff match on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl, riding the energy of a pro-Mexico crowd to its first win over its regional rival in four years.
A tightly played game ended in stunning fashion, with three goals in extra time — including Paul Aguilar’s marvelous winning volley in the 118th minute. Aguilar latched onto a clearance on the right side of the United States penalty area and one-timed a shot low and hard — and past goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
It was Mexico’s second lead in overtime, with Oribe Peralta scoring what many thought was the game-winner early in the extra sessions before the American substitute Bobby Wood tied the match, 2-2, with 12 minutes left.
