Known more for their offensive tendencies, Mazatlán showed they are equally capable of defending as they held Santos Laguna to a scoreless draw. Both teams bent but didn’t break defensively, although the momentum of the match mostly belonged to the visitors.
Santos started out on the front foot, taking the game to Mazatlán. An early free kick by Diego Valdés just missed curling into the top corner of the net in the third minute. Then in the seventh minute, Carlos Acevedo made a great diving save on a shot through traffic. Acevedo made another diving save in the 15th minute, smothering a shot from the top of the box that looked destined to find the corner.
