Italian FA president Carlo Tavecchio has said it is fundamentally important that Italian clubs perform well in Europe in order to win a fourth spot in the Champions League.
A successful season for Serie A clubs in the Champions League and Europa League -- combined with another disappointing year for the Premier League -- would see the English top flight lose one of its four Champions League places to Serie A if its UEFA coefficient drops below Italy's.
