It was as bad a loss as they’d experienced in recent memory, but losing at Estadio Azteca 4-2 to Chivas proved too much as head coach Leonardo Cuéllar stepped down during a brief press conference after the match. Cuéllar was the only manager that Club América has known, who will now have assistant Hugo Ruíz take the helm for the remainder of the season.
Cuéllar’s tenure was one of highs and lows. The expectations of Club América are always to win silverware, and América did just that in the 2018 Clausura tournament. But that memorable season aside, the club never made it past the semifinal round and is in real danger of missing the Liguilla this season.
