Real Madrid swatted 10-man Osasuna aside with a 5-2 victory earlier in the day, a result that saw them steal the perch outright as a result of Las Palmas' late defeat.
Atletico Madrid also got their season up and running after beating Celta Vigo 4-0 away from home, their maiden LaLiga victory of the 2016-17 campaign, while Villarreal defeated Malaga 2-0 in Andalusia.
