Jules Kounde’s France squeak by Belgium, advance to Euro 2024 quarter-finals

Barcelona star Jules Kounde and France are still alive in Euro 2024 and have moved on to the quarter-finals thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Belgium in Monday’s Round of 16 clash in Düsseldorf. A much-hyped knockout clash failed to deliver any entertainment, and Jan Vertonghen’s late own goal was enough to separate the two sides as France once again have found a way to win despite not playing well in this tournament.

There was a whole lot of nothing happening for most of the evening in Düsseldorf as Belgium decided to defend in a low block and gave the ball to a French side that has struggled to create chances all tournament, and that continued to be the case in the first half.
