Johannsson makes his case ahead of Gold Cup semifinals

The 24-year-old admirably filled Jozy Altidore's shoes, scoring his fourth international goal in the U.S. national team's Gold Cup quarterfinal rout of Cuba.

BALTIMORE — Nearly two years have passed since Aron Johannsson committed to the U.S. national team, picking the American program over Iceland. And for nearly two years, the striker has teetered on the cusp of being an impact player without truly leaving his stamp.

So with starting striker Jozy Altidore sent back to Toronto FC following the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage because of fitness issues, Johannsson saw his opportunity in Saturday's quarterfinal against Cuba.
