After Sergio Busquets’s departure in summer 2023, Xavi made it clear he needed one signing above all: Martín Zubimendi. He was supposed to take over and be the “new Busquets” in Xavi’s system.
Xavi, who was then enjoying his first La Liga title, called the defender, according to a new report, and explained his project. However, Zubimendi was not entirely convinced.
The midfielder is said to be highly attached to his hometown club and wanted to play in the UEFA Champions League with La Real.
Another problem was Barcelona’s financial situation. No big sales were sanctioned so the club had very little room for a big move.
