Hodgson must not rely on Rooney

Roy Hodgson's England were first to qualify for Euro 2016 following Saturday's 6-0 stroll against San Marino in a match where Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goals record of 49.

Hodgson's men have seven wins from seven in qualifying, but the proper test -- finally performing well at a major tournament -- awaits.

Hodgson and former England managers have struggled on the bigger stage, and the Three Lions have reached the semifinals of a major tournament just twice since winning the World Cup in 1966.

Sven-Goran Eriksson never managed to take a supposed "Golden Generation" of players beyond the last eight of a finals tournament.
