Cristiano Ronaldo — who else — wanted to take credit for Portugal’s first goal, but in the end it was Bruno Fernandes who put Portugal ahead, 1-0, over Uruguay in the 53rd minute. From outside the box, Fernandes delivered a perfectly weighted ball into the six-yard area and toward an oncoming Ronaldo, who jumped up to flick the ball onward. Ronaldo celebrated the goal as his own but a FIFA review credited the goal to Fernandes.
Minutes before the goal, play had been interrupted when a fan wearing a shirt that said “Save Ukraine” ran onto the field carrying a rainbow flag, likely in protest of Qatar’s laws against homosexuality and FIFA’s decision to ban the flag from stadiums.
