Global Soccer: Time Is Running Out for Last-Place Aston Villa

LONDON — With a new television deal worth $170 million a year for each club just months away, now is not the time to be relegated from England’s Premier League.

For Aston Villa, hope is quickly evaporating. Villa Park is where soccer’s league structure started 128 years ago, but the club is running out of games to save its status in the top tier.

Aston Villa will need to win at least half of its remaining 16 league games to stay up, and it has won only two of 22 games so far.

To add to the uncertainty, the club’s American owner has been trying to sell the team for two years and handed over the reins to a new chairman last week.
