Germany Will Host 2024 European Championship

NYON, Switzerland — Germany was picked as the host of the 2024 European soccer championship on Thursday, beating Turkey in a vote by officials from UEFA, European soccer’s governing body.

UEFA’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, announced the winner after a campaign that saw politics and concerns about human rights in Turkey play a central role. Germany, a campaign favorite with a proven track record of hosting major events, had hoped winning the rights would help it move on from months of public disputes and criticism surrounding its disappointing early exit from this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Turkey is now a four-time losing candidate; it also mounted failed bids to host Euro 2008, 2012 and 2016.
