Gerardo “Tata” Martino wins MLS Cup with Atlanta United ahead of Mexico announcement

Gerardo “Tata” Martino became the first Latino manager to win the MLS Cup, as Atlanta United defeated the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Saturday night.

Josef Martinez opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half before Franco Escobar sealed the win off a set piece in the 54th minute.

After the game, Martino was expectedly tightlipped over his future, but insisted that he’d get back to work on Monday. When asked by FOX Deportes reporter Ruben Rodriguez about a possible move to Mexico, Martino responded by saying, “my great grandma lives there”.

Whether he was joking or not, it has been reported for some time now that Martino will become Mexico’s next national team manager, with an announcement coming from the Mexican Federation as soon as next week.
