RENNES, France — This is the first women’s World Cup to use the Video Assistant Referee system, and the home team so far has been one of the big beneficiaries.
After defeating Norway, 2-1, last week with a penalty kick awarded after V.A.R. review, France defeated Nigeria, 1-0, here on Monday with another assist from the review officials stationed back in Paris.
Two assists in fact. After Wendie Renard, France’s star defender, missed a late second-half penalty kick that had been awarded after V.A.R. review, another review determined that Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Nigerian goalkeeper, had committed an infraction by moving off her line just before Renard kicked the ball.
