France ‘02, Spain ‘14, Germany ‘18? The curse of the World Cup champions

Nobody has retained the trophy since Brazil in 1962, while four of the past five champions have been eliminated in the group stage

From champs to chumps?! Following Sunday's shock loss to Mexico, Germany are in danger of becoming the latest victims of the curse of the World Cup winners.

Three of the past four champions have bowed out at the group stage, and Joachim Low's side are in very real danger of following suit after their surprise 1-0 defeat in Moscow on Sunday.

France won the World Cup for the first time in 1998, when they defeated Brazil in Paris thanks to two headed goals from Zinedine Zidane and a late breakaway effort from Emmanuel Petit.
