At the end of September a Facebook post went viral - so far it has been shared over 80,000 times -- in which an American tourist listed the things he learned about England during his visit to "mostly small towns". In it was one notable line: "Football is a religion, religion is a sport".
Saturday was a perfect example of football being a "religion" as Non-League Day, an annual celebration of local football, took place. The English game is not just about the Premier League; it's equally about the mud, the cold and the futility of the levels from the fifth tier down of the country's football pyramid.
