FIFA sponsors call for 'independent oversight' of reforms

Following the corruption scandal that rocked the governing body earlier this year, major backers say any changes made must be observed from outside

FIFA's major sponsors have sent an open letter to the Executive Committee of world football's governing body demanding "independent oversight" of its reform process.

The sponsors were said to have initially been promised places on FIFA's Reform Committee, established in the wake of the corruption scandal that rocked the sport earlier this year, but are now expected to sit on a yet-to-be-appointed advisory board instead.

The letter read: "As sponsors and long-time supporters of football at every level, AB InBev, adidas, The Coca-Cola Company, McDonald’s and Visa all want to see FIFA effectively resume its mission of developing the great sport of football around the world.
