FIFA President Infantino: I'd Prefer 'A Great MLS Game in the U.S. Rather Than La Liga'

WASHINGTON — La Liga’s intention—or hope—to stage an official game in the United States hasn’t been embraced so far in Spain, where players have threatened to strike over the issue, and doesn’t appear to have the backing of world governing body FIFA. Or, at least, FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino.

In the U.S. capital on Tuesday for a meeting with President Donald Trump to commemorate and discuss the awarding of the 2026 World Cup hosting rights to the USA, Mexico and Canada, Infantino confirmed that FIFA’s approval is required if La Liga intends to play abroad. And while acknowledging that he’s “just the FIFA president,” Infantino said, “I think I would prefer much more a great MLS game in the U.
