Franz Beckenbauer and FIFA VP Angel Maria Villar are being investigated by FIFA, world football's governing body has announced.
FIFA has confirmed a case against Franz Beckenbauer is being examined by the adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee.
Beckenbauer, a former World Cup winner as player and coach with West Germany, was on the committee that chose the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, which were controversially awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.
In the same announcement, FIFA said Angel Maria Villar, who has been a vice president on FIFA's committee since 1998, also is being investigated.
