Ex-England, Chelsea striker Kerry Dixon jailed for assault (The Associated Press)

LUTON, England (AP) -- Former England striker Kerry Dixon has been jailed for nine months after being found guilty of assault.

The 53-year-old Dixon, who scored 147 goals for Chelsea, was sentenced on Friday at Luton Crown Court for attacking a man in a pub last year.

Ben Scoble, 38, was punched and then subjected to a flurry of blows while on the ground.

Judge Barbara Mensah said the attack was ''shocking and sickening to watch'' and the violence was ''disproportionate, unnecessary and completely over the top''.

Dixon had pleaded not guilty to assault and said he had acted in self-defense.
