Spain will head to this summer’s European Championship without defender Sergio Ramos and without a single player from Real Madrid.
Spain’s coach, Luis Enrique, left Ramos off his roster earlier this month, days after the 35-year-old defender was an unused substitute on the final day of his injury-marred season. Enrique said Ramos’s uncertain fitness had left him little choice.
“He will not be with us because he couldn’t compete during large parts of the season, he couldn’t even practice with his club,” Luis Enrique said told reporters. “It was tough. It was a complicated decision but it had to be made to benefit of the entire group.
