Behind a second-half surge, Mexico defeated El Salvador 3-1 in CONCACAF qualifying play for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Friday night at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Mexico was already sitting pretty in Group A. With four wins in four matches for 12 points, El Tri had an eight-point lead over second-place Honduras entering Friday, ensuring Mexico would take the top spot in the group in Round 4.
But the last time Mexico played competitively was during the Copa America, when it was drubbed 7-0 by Chile in the quarterfinals, so there was some added pressure to put on a good performance.
