Craig Burley Claims Roman Abramovich Forced Fernando Torres Transfer From Liverpool to Chelsea

Former Chelsea player Craig Burley has revealed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was responsible for signing Fernando Torres, going against the wishes of his manager.

Abramovich signed Torres from Liverpool in 2011 for a then-club record fee of £50m. However then-Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti did not want to sign the Spaniard, who joined on deadline day in the January transfer window.

Torres made 14 league appearances in his maiden season at Stamford Bridge, helping Chelsea to a second-place finish. Abramovich duly sacked Ancelotti, as the Blues finished nine points off eventual champions Manchester United.

ESPN FC pundit Burley has shed new light on the transfer, as quoted by the Daily Express, saying: “Fernando Torres was over the hill.
