The Fire will be without the Dutch midfielder for at least the majority of the 2017 season.
The Chicago Fire have announced that midfielder John Goossens will miss 5-6 months with an ankle injury.
Goossens was injured late in the Fire's season-opening 1-1 draw at the Columbus Crew last weekend. He will undergo surgery on Friday and will be placed on the disabled list.
“John's injury is cruel, particularly given the effort he was making on the play in added time," Fire general manager Nelson Rodríguez said in a news release. “We're sure he will work to return to the field this season and find ways to contribute to the team in the interim.
