Defending champions Barcelona crashed out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday and missed out on a guaranteed €7 million (£5.6 million) in prize money for not making the last four.
Along with the other losing quarter-finalists—Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain and Wolfsburg—the Blaugrana also lost the potential €22 million (£17.5 million) on offer for advancing to the final and eventually winning the famous trophy.
As if that were not a big enough hit, all four losing sides miss out on a bigger share of the market pool, the money earned from commercial revenue.
For semi-finalists Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, it was a big payday as they all pocketed the €7 million for reaching the last four, and at least €10.
