A goal from Quebec native Josee Belanger was enough for Canada to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Josee Belanger was the hero for Canada on Sunday in Vancouver as her second-half goal helped the home side defeat Switzerland 1-0 and progress to the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup. The goal came in the 52nd minute, as a precise strike from Belanger swept past goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann into the bottom left of the Swiss goal.
Of the several changes Canada coach John Herdman made to his line up, the decision to move Belanger from fullback to forward to make room for defender Rhian Wilkinson was unexpected, but it paid off for the home side as Belanger not only scored but was a constant menace.
