CINCINNATI -- A fumble, a tipped pass and a sack to start overtime is pretty much a team's worst nightmare, but that was how the extra period started for SMU against Cincinnati on Saturday. The horrific sequence pushed the Mustangs out of field goal range and set up a fourth-and-26 to overcome. Failing to score meant the Bearcats would need only a field goal to win.
Anticipating that Cincinnati would line up in a prevent defense, quarterback Ben Hicks planned to use his feet to extend the play and give his receivers time to find space. He rolled to his right, nearing the sideline and line of scrimmage simultaneously.
