ORLANDO -- SMU's been through a lot this season. Injuries to the team's best players and a key reserve derailed a campaign that seemed destined to end in the big dance and now may not even warrant an NIT invite.
Which is to say, SMU doesn't have anything left to lose. And that can make a team that's down on its luck suddenly dangerous.
That's what Connecticut found out on Thursday, as SMU (17-15) topped the Huskies 80-73 in the opening game of the American Conference tournament to secure a date against Cincinnati in the quarterfinals Friday.
