Why SMU basketball's season will hinge on the development of its freshman class

UNIVERSITY PARK -- In his first season as the head coach at SMU, Tim Jankovich was hesitant to play true freshmen. The Mustangs had three on the roster in 2016-17. Even with just six upperclassmen, Jankovich preferred to stick with that sextet in the rotation rather than expand to include the first-year players.

Harry Froling averaged the most minutes per game of the freshmen with 14.6. He transferred from the program in early December. Two weeks later, fellow Australian frosh Tom Wilson left SMU, too. After the season, the third member of the 2016 class, Dashawn McDowell, made the exodus complete.
