UNIVERSITY PARK -- The SMU defense wanted an opportunity to prove this year was different. The Mustangs just didn't want this much opportunity.
During SMU's season-opening 46-23 loss to North Texas on Saturday, the Mustangs surrendered 529 yards, which placed them among the worst 20 units after the first week of play. But SMU coach Sonny Dykes is here to tell you not to judge the defense on cumulative stats.
Because of SMU's offensive ineffectiveness, North Texas ran 94 plays and held the ball for 44:13 of the game. Only one defense nationally faced more plays in a game this season (Ole Miss faced 95 plays against Texas Tech).
