The first day of February did nothing but underscore the hodgepodge that is the middle of the American Athletic Conference.
Temple pulled the surprise overtime upset over No. 16 Wichita State, while a few hundred miles south SMU -- minus leading scorer Shake Milton -- fell to Tulsa.

What it amounts to is a logjam in the middle of the American Conference standings. UCF and Memphis are 5-4 in conference play and tied for fourth place in a league in which only four teams receive a bye in the first round of the conference tournament.
