Texas lost quarterback depth this offseason when Arlington native and former starting QB Shane Buechele decided to enter the transfer portal. Buechele ultimately ended up landing close to home, committing to play for SMU.
Texas WR Collin Johnson and Buechele were both a part of Texas' 2016 recruiting class. They were both four-star recruits and bonded on and off the field quickly. The two worked together on routes before and after practices and connected on multiple freshman-to-freshman touchdowns that season, including a two-TD game in Lubbock.
Sam Ehlinger's emergence eventually forced Buechele's hand, though. Despite passing for more than 4,500 yards in his career at Texas, Buechele knew he'd need to go elsewhere if he wanted a chance to start.
