SMU's men's basketball team has hired Tyrone Maxey to its coaching staff, two sources confirmed Wednesday. Maxey will be the team's new director of recruiting.
Maxey is a fixture in the Dallas high school basketball scene, dating back nearly two decades. He most recently served as an assistant coach at South Garland.
Maxey is the father of South Garland shooting guard Tyrese Maxey, a five-star prospect in the 2019 class according to 247sports.com. Tyrese Maxey already holds 18 scholarship offers, including from SMU, UCLA, Michigan State and Texas.
As a 2019 recruit, he can still commit to SMU despite the NCAA's new rule that prohibits employing an individual associated with a prospect.
