UNIVERSITY PARK -- On the afternoon of Sept. 22, SMU coach Sonny Dykes made a bold -- or outrageous -- decision that continues to pay dividends.
The Mustangs were in overtime against Navy. At that point, they were 0-4 in the Dykes era dating back to the 2017 Frisco Bowl by a combined score of 184-65.
Navy took the first swing and scored a touchdown. Dykes responded with a move no one makes.
He changed quarterbacks. Dykes sat freshman William Brown and went back to junior Ben Hicks, who had not played in six quarters since being hooked at halftime of a loss at Michigan.
