Houston could hardly stop SMU as it drove down the field midway through the fourth quarter Saturday.
The Mustangs' season-long lamented ground attack had found a rhythm, churning out 30 yards to complement a couple of completions by quarterback Ben Hicks. After SMU allowed Houston to threaten a comeback by cutting its lead to seven points, 38-31, with about nine minutes left, SMU was pushing down the Gerald J. Ford Stadium field, poised for an American Athletic Conference upset.
The only thing that could halt the Mustangs? Lightning.
A storm passed over the Dallas area with 3:24 remaining in the tilt, halting SMU after its 10th play of a possession that had burned about six minutes off the clock.
