In the season's third game, at Michigan, SMU coach Sonny Dykes pulled junior quarterback Ben Hicks because of a pattern of forcing throws into coverage.
Dykes did not have a similar response to Hicks' overtime interception that was returned by Cincinnati safety James Wiggins for a game-winning touchdown on Saturday.
Dykes on Monday acknowledged Hicks ""didn't make a great throw'' but added the game situation had to be considered.
"Every situation is different,'' Dykes said. "In overtime, trying to convert on third down, you're more inclined to throw the ball into a tight window.''
Hicks has thrown four interceptions for the season.
