SMU quarterback Ben Hicks probably didn't expect to find his way to the top of the depth chart at the beginning of this freshman season.
But after senior Matt Davis went down with a season-ending injury, Hicks was thrust into the starting role out of necessity. The Mustangs were suddenly down to one scholarship quarterback.
While Hicks didn't have the smoothest season, the experience gained has appeared to give him the edge to become SMU's starter this fall.
Hicks is the starter after the team's 15 spring practices, coach Chad Morris said during Wednesday's teleconference with the American Athletic Conference's coaches.
