Rompola, who helped establish SMU as both player and coach, to retire at season's end; 'This has been an incredible journey'

UNIVERSITY PARK -- After 35 years on the Hilltop, SMU's Rhonda Rompola will step down. She plans to retire after the season, her 25th as head coach.

Rompola helped establish the program as a player from 1981-82 and then guided the Mustangs to nine 20-win seasons, five conference titles and 13 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA tournaments. She is 438-314 as head coach.

Rompola will be honored by the school after the final home game on Saturday against Houston (2 p.m.).

"This has been an incredible journey," Rompola said. "However, I've coached the game for 30-plus years, and it's extremely demanding of your time.
