UNIVERSITY PARK - Memphis coach Mike Norvell is an unabashed admirer of SMU coach Sonny Dykes and his offensive planning.
“He’s somebody that I’ve always looked up to as being very innovative in his approach,’’ Norvell told reporters in Memphis during the run-up to Friday’s game.
This marked the first on-the-field Dykes-Norvell meeting since Nov. 28, 2015. California, with Dykes as the head coach, defeated Arizona State 48-46 on a last-second field goal. Norvell directed the ASU offense that produced 586 total yards. Cal had 680 yards.
“We come from the same school of thought,’’ Dykes said.
