Nichols: No postseason for SMU, but Mustangs hope to reward seniors with consolation prize

With the regular season winding down, teams are positioning themselves for the postseason, hoping for a late surge to earn a spot or enhance their seeding in the NCAA tournament.

For No. 24 SMU, there's no need to worry about RPI. Simple math is all that's required. Season ends on March 6.

"It's crazy, we have four games and four practices left," coach Larry Brown said Tuesday.

SMU stands 16th in the RPI. Only 12 teams have more wins and just one (Hawaii at 22-3) has fewer losses.

Ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA violations, the Mustangs departed for Thursday's game at Memphis with the finish line in view.
