UNIVERSITY PARK -- Sonny Dykes was allowed a moment of nostalgia as he was introduced as SMU's new head football coach Tuesday. The 48-year-old was born in Big Spring and went to high school in Lubbock. His coaching career started in Dallas' orbit, at Richard Pearce High School and Navarro Junior College.
And, he told the gathered alumni, he'd grown up an SMU fan, closely following the Pony Express teams of the early 1980s. Dykes recalled asking his father, the late Texas Tech head coach Spike, for tickets to an SMU game for his 13th birthday.
