National reaction: Larry Brown criticized for timing of SMU departure only hours after deadly Dallas shootings

SMU Mustangs head coach Larry Brown discusses the game during the post game press conference after defeating East Carolina Pirates 77-54 at Moody Coliseum in University Park, Texas, Saturday, January 17, 2015.

Larry Brown has stepped down as head men's basketball coach at SMU, according to multiple reports.

Brown, 75, is leaving because SMU's unwillingness to offer him a full-time contract, reported CBS' Jon Rothstein, and assistant Tim Jankovich is expected to take Brown's replace.

The veteran coach's move was quickly criticized on Twitter, both because of his history of leaving programs -- he has six different head coaching jobs in the past 20 years -- and because it came less than 12 hours after five police offers were killed in a shooting in Downtown Dallas.
