SMU's recruiting class has taken a hit.

Three-star Many (La.) outside linebacker Ni'Kendrick Carter backed out of his verbal pledge to the Mustangs on Tuesday.

Carter announced his decision via Twitter.

Carter originally committed to SMU in June over offers from Arkansas State, FIU, Oklahoma State, South Florida, UTSA and others.

At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Carter is ranked as the No. 80 outside linebacker in the country and No. 39 overall prospect in the state, per 247Sports Composite.

SMU is down to 18 commits in its 2019 class.
