UNIVERSITY PARK -- SMU reversed a recent trend in beating Navy on Saturday. The Midshipmen did not leave the Mustangs' defense in tatters.
SMU (1-0, 1-3) allowed only 21 points in regulation in the 31-30 overtime victory. Compare that to the previous three seasons. Navy won all three games, producing a total of 173 points.
"Any time you hold a triple-option team to 21 points, it's a good day at the office," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said Tuesday.
This represented progress for a defense that allowed more than 40 points in each game as SMU opened with three consecutive losses.
