In his first week on the job with Houston, Cougars coach Major Applewhite tried his utmost to keep quarterback Ben Hicks from going to SMU.
Hicks originally committed to Houston with the intention of enrolling in January, 2015, but changed to SMU. Applewhite joined Houston as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Jan. 8, 2015. That gave him about two days to make a final sales pitch to Hicks.
"He already had SMU sheets and everything,'' Applewhite said during his weekly press conference. "He was ready to move into the dorm, so it was a tough get with about 48 hours to try to flip him.
