For an idea of Bobby Boyd's football pedigree, consider that Tex Maule once typed that he was "Garland's answer to Doak Walker," which probably explains how SMU and Oklahoma got in a snit over his letter of intent and a Pro Football Hall of Fame committee would eventually line him up next to Lem Barney and Herb Adderley in the secondary of its all-decade team of the '60s.
The Doaker comparison sprang from everything Boyd did for Garland: Ran, passed, kicked, returned punts and kicks, and played defense, too, earning him All-State honors twice while leading the Owls to the '55 state finals.
