Three years ago, when Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin stood in front of a throng of reporters following one of Texas A&M's pro days and discussed the possibility of having three first-round picks in the 2014 NFL draft, he made sure to keep things in perspective.
"We had three guys go to the [NFL scouting] combine," Sumlin said in March 2014. "Vanderbilt had four."
It was an astute observation and an overlooked fact, given that the Aggies were sending Jake Matthews, Mike Evans and Johnny Manziel to the NFL (all three of whom wound up being chosen in the first round of the 2014 draft).
