The duck hunt that John Chavis and Kevin Steele will never forget

Before John Chavis and Kevin Steele were defensive coordinators in the SEC, before they took their first coaching jobs, before they played together at Tennessee, they were a couple of childhood friends from Dillon, South Carolina, who liked to go duck hunting together before school.

There was one duck hunt, though, that nearly changed the course of history.

It was like any other day. Chavis and Steele typically drove school buses in the morning, but because it was duck season, they woke up at 4:30 a.m. and while it was still pitch black outside, they drove to a nearby creek they had scoped out previously.
